He thought his powers were inherited from Melinda Warren a witch from the Warren line however it was false.

His parents are mortals and Nathan's powers were inherited from his paternal grandfather, Richard James who was the most powerful upper-level witch.

It is unknown why he is connected to Warrens because Gordon Russell was his past life and the father of P. Russell (Phoebe Halliwell's past life).

Death and Rebirth

In 2030, he died in a car accident, accepted a Cupid Ring, was reborn as a full Cupid, and was named Charles. However, accepting this new destiny forbade him from ever seeing his family again.
